Courtyard by Marriott (abbreviated as Courtyard Marriott on signage) is a hotel brand owned by Marriott International that offers a variety of accommodations. It is situated in High Point, NC, next to High Point University. Hotels in the Marriott mid-priced brand are largely targeted at business travelers, but they can also accommodate families on their travels.
Desks, couches, and complimentary Internet access are provided in each room. The majority of locations offer a bistro that serves freshly cooked and prepared breakfast (which is not included in the room rate), as well as snacks, sandwiches, and other items. All of them have “markets” that are open 24 hours a day. Premium enhancements, such as enhanced Internet access and larger “suite-style” rooms, are also available for an additional fee.
Cambria Hotels & Suites, Wingate Inn, and Hilton Garden Inn are some of Courtyard’s competitors in the mid-priced business-oriented hotel category.
Marriott struggled to identify locations that were compatible with the established Marriott brand during the early 1980s. Courtyard was established to accommodate both business and leisure guests in order to increase the selection. The new brand was created to target smaller properties in lower-demand areas of the country. By 1987, the business had grown from three test sites in 1983 to more than 90 hotels.
The first facility, in San Luis, was opened in 1983, and it was the first location of Marriott’s sibling brand. The company first catered to business travelers, but over time it expanded its reach to include the leisure market. The majority of facilities now include a swimming pool or fitness center, as well as microwaves and mini-fridges, as well as family-friendly pricing. The majority of them feature a mini-fridge in every room, and the majority of them offer a complimentary guest microwave in The Market as well. Suite rooms are typically equipped with microwave ovens.
In the mid-1980s, Marriott International invested $2 billion in the expansion of the Courtyard by Marriott brand in order to attract the regular Holiday Inn customer base.
In 2007, Marriott launched its Refreshing Business Initiative, which aimed to modernize Courtyard facilities in order to better serve the needs of business travelers. An updated lobby and an extended-hours bar were among the renovations, which not only provided a popular social setting but also helped the hotel earn more money.
In 2017, a Courtyard Marriott Hotel opened on the island of Bonaire, becoming the first American chain hotel to do so on the island. Through a partnership with a local dive shop chain, Dive Friends Bonaire, the Courtyard Marriott Hotel also became the first Courtyard hotel in the world to have an onsite scuba diving facility.
As of June 30, 2020, there were 1,254 Courtyard Marriott Hotels in operation across the world, with 187,095 rooms, as well as 288 hotels with 49,335 rooms currently under construction.
