The High Point Museum is located in the city of High Point, NC. The High Point Museum, which is a section of the High Point Public Library, is dedicated to sharing the history of Greater High Point, providing perspective on current issues, and developing the feeling of community in the community.

The Department of History at High Point University has teamed with the High Point Museum to hold a pop-up museum on the university’s campus on October 22, 2021. The display brought attention to the furniture business and the contribution it has made to the development of the community.

The program served two purposes: first, it provided an opportunity for history students to learn more about the history field, and second, it provided an opportunity for students to engage with the High Point Museum and learn more about High Point’s rich past.

Part of the purpose of the event was to raise awareness of the field of history as a whole. Museums and artifacts are important components of historical research, and they influence historians’ investigations in the same way that manuscripts and other written sources do. This collaboration draws attention to the specialized area of ‘public history,’ which focuses on how to construct displays that engage with and educate the general people about history and culture.

An exhibit on the history of the furniture market traveled from location to location; a chair caned by AJ Jones, an HPU adjunct instructor of history and a museum costumed interpreter; pieces of burnt wood for dendrochronology testing from the historic Hoggatt House displayed in a display case; a chamber pot; and items from the museum’s Blacksmith Shop were all on display at the temporary museum.

There are a plethora of diverse professional opportunities available in the field of public history and museum studies. This is an excellent opportunity for students to experience a tiny sampling of what the High Point Museum has to offer, to ask questions of museum experts, and to talk about their future careers in these disciplines once they graduate. They place a high importance on community involvement, and their current connection with HPU is tremendously beneficial to both students and the general public. They may reminisce about the past, but they are also concerned in fostering the future.
