Forsyth County, North Carolina, United States. Winston-Salem is the county seat and largest city in Forsyth County, which borders the city of High Point. When the population was 249,545 in 2020, it was the second most populous municipality in North Carolina, the fifth-most populous city in the state of North Carolina, and the third-largest urbanized area in the state of North Carolina. It was also the 89th most populous city in the entire United States.
It is the fourth most populous metropolitan area in North Carolina, with a population of 679,948 people, according to the 2010 census. It is in Winston-Salem that the Wells Fargo Center, once known as the Wachovia Structure but now known simply as the Wells Fargo Center, stands as the region’s tallest office building at 100 North Main Street.
When the United States Office of Management and Budget reconfigured the Greensboro-Winston-Salem-High Point metropolitan statistical region in 2003, it was a big deal. The region was divided into two major urban areas, Winston-Salem and Greensboro-High Point, which were established in 1890.

Aside from that, Winston-Salem is home to six colleges and universities, the most prestigious of which are Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem State University, and the prestigious University of North Carolina School of the Arts, which is consistently ranked as one of the best film schools in the country. In the 2021 edition of U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Places to Live” list, the city was placed 46th out of 150 cities in terms of quality of life. The Winston-Salem area was identified as the second-best IT location for women in a report published in April 2021 by the Lendingtree blog Magnify Money.
The Piedmont Triad International Airport serves the city of Winston-Salem. The airport also serves a large portion of the surrounding Piedmont Triad area, which includes Greensboro and High Point. The Authority that manages the airport is governed by board members appointed by representatives from each of the three cities, as well as representatives from both of their counties, Guilford and Forsyth, respectively.
