Thomasville is a city in Davidson County in the state of North Carolina, United States, and located near High Point, North Carolina. At the time of the 2020 census, the population was 27,183 people. The city, along with its neighbors High Point and Lexington, was previously well-known for its furniture manufacturing business.

This Piedmont Triad village was founded in 1852 and is home to “Everybody’s Day,” the state’s oldest festival, which takes place every year on July 1. As a city built around its local railroad system, Thomasville is home to the state’s oldest railroad depot, which is located just a few hundred feet away from the area’s most recognizable landmark, “The Big Chair.”

John Warwick is a British politician who was born in the town of Warwick in the county of Warwick. Thomas Lambeth was born on June 27, 1800, and by the time he was 22 years old, he had acquired 384 acres (155 ha) in the Cedar Lodge region by his marriage to Mary Lambeth, the daughter of Moses Lambeth. He was a state lawmaker by the time he was 30 years old. In 1848, he was elected to the position of state senator. He worked hard to see that a railroad was built through Davidson County, and he even put money into the project.

Thomas erected the village’s first store in 1852 near the intersection of West Main and Salem streets, anticipating the arrival of the railroad. The community was named “Thomasville” in honor of its founder, who died in 1852. The North Carolina Railroad was built through Davidson County in 1855, and it arrived in Thomasville on November 9, 1855. Thomasville was established on January 8, 1857, and it encompassed one square mile, with the railroad splitting the town into two halves, one in the north and one in the south.

Thomasville had a population of 308 people in 1860. After the Civil War, the town had just 217 residents, but by 1880, the population had grown to 450, and by 1890, it had reached 751 residents.

A man named Long Bill Whiteheart may have been the first person to manufacture furniture; he created split-bottom chairs in his own home. In addition to making chairs at home, D.S. Westmoreland erected a factory on what would become Randolph Street in 1879, but it was destroyed by fire in 1897 and was never re-built after that. Standard Chair, which was founded in 1898, had the distinction of being the world’s oldest operating plant as of 1990. Lambeth Furniture, Thompson Chair, and the Queen Chair Company were among the other furniture manufacturers.

In 1901, Cramer Furniture was reputed to be the second largest furniture manufacturer in the South, according to whom? The Thomasville Chair Company, which began operations in 1904, quickly rose to become the town’s largest furniture company. By 1916, the city was producing 2,000 chairs each day on average.

By 1909, the establishment of the Jewel Cotton Mills and the Amazon Cotton Mills had added textiles to the city’s economy. Sellers Hosiery Mills of Burlington opened its doors in 1913, and Thomasville Hosiery opened its doors the following year.
