Midway is an incorporated town in Davidson County in the state of North Carolina, United States, and is adjacent to the town of High Point, NC area. It is situated inside the boundaries of the township of the same name. Midway is located roughly 890 feet (270 meters) above sea level and had a population of 4,679 people as of the 2010 census. Midway is a part of the Piedmont Triad region, and it is bordered by the towns of Arcadia (to the west), Welcome (to the south), Wallburg (to the northeast), and Winston-Salem (to the northeast) (north). During the month of October, the town celebrates the upcoming Christmas season by hosting the Midway Christmas Parade..
Because of its geographical location, which is “midway” between the cities of Winston-Salem and Lexington, the town of Midway was given its name. Because of urban development and annexation by the city of Winston-Salem, the logical apparency of the town’s name has been jumbled, as the city limits of Winston-Salem now share a border with Midway, although Lexington’s nearest border is 7 miles (11 km) distant from Winston-Salem.
Originally known as “Eller,” the neighborhood that now serves as the heart of modern Midway was established when the Eller train depot was built, and was named after members of the Eller family who lived in the area. Despite widespread abandonment of the term “Eller” by the general public, local media, and business institutions, many maps continued to show the region as “Eller” until its incorporation in 2006.
The town of Midway does not currently have a post office, nor does it have a ZIP code that corresponds to its location. Midway, North Carolina, is a small settlement in Rockingham County, 5 miles (8 kilometers) southwest of Reidsville, although the post office with that designation is not located within the city limits. As a result, the majority of residents of the town choose to use the city names of Winston-Salem or Lexington when sending mail through the United States Postal Service.
Midway Elementary School, a K-5 grade school that is a member of the Davidson County School System, is located in Midway. The majority of the students attend Oak Grove Middle and High Schools, which are brand new and just a few minutes away. North Davidson Middle (grades 6–8) and North Davidson High (grades 9–12), both located in adjacent Welcome, will have a few kids who will attend North Davidson Middle and North Davidson High.
