It is a suburb of the surrounding cities of Greensboro and High Point, and is located in Guilford County, North Carolina, United States. Jamestown is the county seat. At the time of the 2010 census, the population was 3,382.
The North Carolina General Assembly passed a statute in 1907 that provided for the establishment and maintenance of public high schools in each county in the state. It was decided to build Jamestown Public School as a union school, and it quickly became known as the “best equipped school” in Guilford County, thanks to the addition of dorms for boarding students. The school was completely destroyed by fire in 1914, but a new structure was erected the following year. In its current location in the heart of Jamestown, the Jamestown Public Library is housed in this structure.
The school’s enrollment increased significantly, and a new high school facility in Jamestown was dedicated in the fall of 1959. It was decided to name the new high school after Lucy Coffin Ragsdale in honor of her commitment to and enthusiasm for public school education in Jamestown. T.G. Madison served as the school’s first principal, and he was succeeded by Steve Dalton. Kathryn Rogers was the third principal in the school’s history, and she was the first woman to hold the position.
Ragsdale High School is one of 26 high schools in the Guilford County School System. Ragsdale’s district encompasses parts of northeastern High Point area, southeast Jamestown, and the Adams Farm/Sedgefield section of Greensboro, among other communities. Jim Gibson serves as the school’s principal at the moment.
Millis Road Elementary School opened its doors for the first time in the fall of 1961. The initial class consisted of 360 pupils, 12 teachers, a part-time librarian, and one principal at the time of registration. It was intended to be constructed in order to alleviate overcrowding in the Jamestown neighborhood.
Despite the fact that the school only had a capacity for 560 pupils, it once had a student population of 792. When the neighboring Pilot Elementary School opened its doors in the fall of 1996, the student population dropped to 330 students. There are now 515 students enrolled.
Pre-K through fifth grade has been tested in a variety of organizational patterns at the school, beginning with first and sixth grades and subsequently with third and fifth grades, and the current pre-K through fifth grade has been tried in a variety of organizational patterns. Paidela strategies and procedures are being used in the seminars that Millis Road pupils are attending, which are led by professors and professionals. Millis Road is located in the Guilford County School System’s District 5, which serves students in grades K-12.
To compensate for the town’s growth, Jamestown has since built two more elementary schools and one more middle school. Guilford Technical Community College is a community college that provides higher education to persons in the surrounding area.
