Located in Guilford County, North Carolina, United States, Greensboro (previously Greensborough) is a city and the county seat of the same name. It is adjacent to the city of High Point, NC. Located in North Carolina’s Piedmont Triad metropolitan region, it is the third-most populated city in the state, as well as the 70th-most populous city in the United States.

It had a population of 299,035, according to the 2020 United States Census. It is at this city that three main interstate routes (Interstate 40, Interstate 85, and Interstate 73) in the Piedmont region of central North Carolina come together. The city is also known as the Crossroads of the Piedmont.

Originally planned around a central courthouse square, Greensborough (the name used prior to 1895) became the county seat in 1808, taking over for Guilford Court House. Consequently, the county courts were relocated closer to the geographic center of the county, a site that was more easily accessible at the time by the bulk of the county’s residents, who traveled by horse or on foot to and from work.

The U.S. Office of Management and Budget redefined the previous Greensboro–Winston–Salem–High Point metropolitan statistical region in 2003, replacing it with the Greensboro–Winston–Salem–High Point metropolitan statistical area. The Greensboro–High Point metropolitan area and the Winston–Salem metropolitan area were established as divisions of the larger region.

The Greensboro–High Point metropolitan area had a population of 723,801 people in 2010. It was estimated that 1,599,477 people lived in the combined statistical area (CSA) of Greensboro—Winston-Salem—High Point—commonly known as the Piedmont Triad—in 2010.

The Greensboro Science Center, the International Civil Rights Museum, the Weatherspoon Art Museum, the Greensboro Symphony, the Greensboro Ballet, the Triad Stage, the Wyndham Golf Championship, and the Greensboro Coliseum Complex, which serves as the headquarters of the Atlantic Coast Conference and hosts a variety of sporting events, concerts, and other events, are just a few of the city’s many notable attractions.

Local sports teams include the Greensboro Grashoppers of the South Atlantic Baseball League, the Carolina Dynamo of USL League Two, the Greensboro Swarm (NBA G League), and the Greensboro Roller Derby (Greensboro Roller Derby is a roller derby squad). The North Carolina Folk Festival, First Fridays in Downtown Greensboro, the Fun Fourth of July Festival, the North Carolina Comedy Festival, and Winter Wonderlights are just a few of the annual events in the area. For five years, from 2015 to 2017, Greensboro was home to the National Folk Festival.
